A mom of a 17 year old son with autism expressed how he just began to pinch, hit, and making attempts to choke her and family members. Unfortunately, these scenarios can become a reality during school transition.

Research studies indicate that aerobic exercise can reduce negative and self-stimulating habits. Body rocking, spinning, head-nodding can be controlled by the use of exercise. Most importantly, exercise can discourage aggressive and self-injurious behavior while improving attention span. If you know a young adult who is experiencing repetitive behaviors: 1) TAKE an inventory of the young adult’s opportunity to exercise and 2) ADD exercise to daily activity. There are benefits in physical exercise and potential to improve behavioral, physiological, emotional, and social outcomes. “Autistic children need physical activity to help them develop as well as to help them deal with high levels of frustration from sensory difficulties. I would even say that their body craves it. If that physical activity is denied, then they will find other, more inappropriate, ways to be active.” Daniel Coleman
